Do you go down the rabbit hole?
People often tout the healing power of love. Not for one moment do I doubt its restorative ability. What I wonder is why we do not place equal emphasis on the importance of listening. Do you know how many lives could be helped by words such as, “I hear you,” “I believe you,” “I understand,” and “I agree.” In my mind healing begins the moment we are truly seen and heard.
I recently had a brief exchange with an individual where I expressed my feelings on a particular topic. Within moments, I was met with a response that negated and invalidated my personal feelings. There was no room for my truth. No room? No, none at all. What took me more by surprise was the most unusual physical sensation I experienced after their unreceptive response. The life force in my body momentarily shut down. Lights out. “Where’s my soul? Have you seen my soul? It was here a moment ago.”
Deep breath. Find your way back. Despite feeling disheartened, my inner voice said, This person is not your audience. They are incapable of hearing your truth. The issue is with them. Not you.
I know we are not always going to believe or support everything we hear. That’s a natural and healthy part of life. Although, if someone does not subscribe to my way of thinking, I hope they will have the common courtesy to listen and reply in a respectful manner. A manner in which I feel seen and heard. This alone can lessen the chasm between disparate opinions.
With that said, the next time little Janie comes to you and says, “Mom, Dad I’d like to get a baby pet giraffe.” Instead of getting overly upset wondering what appropriately sized bassinet blanket to knit, instead take a deep breath and say, “Isn’t this exciting news Henry?”
“Why yes, it is Madge.”
The moment we are allowed to express our truth, our life force increases, and our soul becomes a bit brighter. From this elevated vantage differing viewpoints are more likely to be received, resulting in creative, solution-oriented progress.
Now this doesn’t necessarily mean little Janie will get her pet giraffe. However, it does ensure her feelings will be heard thus creating a sense of empowerment, where together a more suitable sized pet can be happily discussed. One that can freely roam the unexpected wilds of a fenced in backyard. And perhaps sponsoring a giraffe isn’t entirely out of the question.
Truth alone has a stabilizing effect, bringing people back to their senses, and making certain we do not stray far from our soul centered self. Truth is our ally and most ardent protector. It, too, is one of life’s most precious commodities that deserves to be heard.
