Black Beans

Trust me . . . there’s a story here.

Over the past week or so, I have had an insatiable craving for none other than black beans. I can’t seem to eat enough of them. It’s a day after day craving, whereupon the evidence of this desire makes itself inescapably known. My husband has issued a wide berth surrounding the parameters of my body. But this is not the point of my story.

Other than the musical notes of which my body produced, it also responded most favorably to this particular food item. Like drinking water to quench one’s thirst—that type of satisfaction. And because I was so amazed by the results, and had satisfied my craving, I was curious to know the nutritional value of black beans.

Did you know that black beans are high in iron, which is a necessary component for carrying oxygen to our red blood cells, as well as for the production of hemoglobin? Neither did I.

My body needed iron and knew exactly what to do and guided me to the source. Simply, wow factor. Now imagine, what if we were to live our lives based upon this intuitive guidance? Think of how happy and healthy we would be.

Over the years, I have consciously and respectfully diminished those voices in my head who have taken up far too much real estate. In other words, those individuals or societal norms that prevented me from following my intuition—hence, jamming my internal guidance system.

Finding my intuitive voice has not been a straight line. More often than not, it was simply ignored or existed as background static noise. Moreover, I did not know what my intuition truly felt or sounded like. Therefore, how could I trust and depend upon it? But I kept at it, despite these uncertainties.

Now, whenever my intuition presents itself, it has a distinctive feeling. The words clarity, calm, and certainty come to mind, as if to suggest that my intuition holds a higher frequency than a conscious thought, because it comes from a higher plane of existence. My personal experience with intuition has meant quieting the voice of my ego and fully listening, sensing, and feeling with my entire body.

I have a spiritual teacher who often refers to the term, “the body brain.” I can’t think of a better way to visually describe intuition. Listening to the body brain is an excellent way to discern whether or not something or someone is inherently right for you.

This deep dive into listening to our intuition also includes listening and respecting one another’s intuition, which is not always an easy thing to do. But here again, the voice of intuition will guide us as we release the need for control or what we may feel is best for the other person.

Now more than ever, we are living in a time period where intuition has a chance to fully flourish and thrive. Collectively, we have entered a new era and level of consciousness. And I have no doubt that when we come into this world as a newborn bouncing baby, we are completely equipped with a state-of-the-art honing system—with all the bells and whistles intact. But if this ability lies dormant or is discouraged, our intuition can quickly take a backseat to the rational mind. And thus begins the process of thinking rather than feeling, when in actuality, the two can greatly support and profit from one another.

And to think that a little black bean inspired this story. I love the feeling that comes from following my intuition—my spirit within. However, I still must contend with those renters in my head, who at times try to tell me to live otherwise.
