Memories of a Forgotten Lifetime
When my husband and I lived in the Midwest, my husband wanted to remodel both the upstairs and downstairs in our home. However, in order to do so, he first needed to find a skilled excavator to begin the work. This involved meeting with several contractors to provide quotes for the specified job. Each contractor was professional and provided a detailed quote, but what we were not expecting was the fact that one of these men began work without our approval.
Looking out our back door one morning, my husband and I were surprised to see several thick blankets neatly placed on the ground in the area where the work would begin. Given the Midwest’s cold temperatures, this was a way to better insulate the ground for easier excavation. This particular contractor not only knew what he was doing, he also showed great care for our property.
Both my husband and I were impressed by not only his initiative, but his willingness to do the best job possible. We hired him on the spot and were more than pleased with his work. My husband soon became friends with this individual.
“Lay the blanket” is a phrase that floats around in our house whenever a job needs to get done that either requires initiative, fortitude, or a go-get-it attitude. And this is not about hustling your way through life, it’s knowing that you are indeed the right person for the job.
Sometimes people just can’t see the value of what you may have to offer, so it may take a little convincing or as we now say, “Lay the blanket.”
