Do you go down the rabbit hole?
Phew! I just had a close encounter with an alternate reality. And judging by the end result, I now know why we put into place a spiritual practice.
It was dinnertime and, as usual, I was preparing the meal. My hands were busy washing and chopping the vegetables, while my heart, mind, and mouth were actively engaged in reciting positive affirmations. You could say I was flying high in my corner of the kitchen.
Midway through the preparation, my husband asked for some assistance downstairs in order to complete a difficult task. So, I told the carrots that I’d be back shortly to resume our game of “call and response.” Well, from the impatient look on my husband’s face, you could see he was not the least bit amused, and offered a rather menacing look. However, his intended stink-eye stare was simply no match for the power of the superconscious mind. That’s right, the power of the superconscious mind!
To paraphrase the Buddha, if someone gives you a gift (in this case a perturbed facial expression) and you choose to not accept the gift, who then goes home with it? That’s right, they do. Despite my husband’s stare, I remained in a positive mood, although my energy was now hurried in order to help him.
As I took the first two steps down the stairs, I felt my left foot catch the edge of the step and began to fall sideways. This would not have been a pretty fall, where “All the King’s horses and all the King’s men” . . . but something clearly stopped me from falling, and I regained my balance to continue down the stairs.
When I replayed the incident in my mind, an alternate version unfolded. Had I allowed my husband’s impatient look to affect my attitude, I may have indeed fallen down the stairs. I am convinced that my affirmations, and feel good state of mind provided the necessary safety and protection.
This is the power of affirmations. This, too, is the power of what we choose to place in our energy field. When affirming the best, the highest, or the happiest of moments, you invoke a like-minded scenario. Call and response. Intent and outcome.
What I have noticed from many years of practicing affirmations, is you do not need to set aside a specific time and place to do so. Time is always available. I repeat my affirmations in the shower, in the car, and at the kitchen counter. Even while lying awake at two in the morning. I love to create that special feeling where elevated thoughts and vibrations reign.
One of my favorite metaphysical authors, Florence Scovel Shinn, wrote, “Your word is your wand.” 1 No doubt, this is as true for me as it is for you.
Well, the carrots are calling, it is indeed time to go. Let’s listen once more to what they know. Use this wand, your words and heart to fill the subconscious mind with inspired thought. Turn away from all that may lead you astray, until you have reached a better day.
“The superconscious is the realm of perfect ideas.” 2
